Herbarium of the Department of Botany (- OL)

About herbarium:

established in 1946, older herbaria specimens are very rare;
contains approx. 100000 vascular plant specimens, collected mostly in the area of the Czech Republic and Slovakia;
annual addition is approx. 3000-5000 specimens;
there is a special collection of some taxonomically critical groups, i.e.

genus Taraxacum, esp. section Taraxacum (= Ruderalia) (containing at least 20000 specimens esp. from the Czech Republic region)
genus Rubus, approx. 20000 specimens (also predominantly from the Czech Republic region);

less available are specimens originating from other parts of Europe and the world (e.g. South America, Oceania, Africa)

Specimens of former staff members (Bednář V., Bednářová J., Dančák M., Dostál J., Jílek B., Mrkos O., Pečinka A., Pluhař V., Velísek V.) are of great importance as well as those of contemporary ones (Duchoslav M., Mládek J., Trávníček B., Vašut R.). Students’ specimens, esp. MSc. students’, form a great part of herbarium.

The study room:

The herbarium has a study room where students and researchers can study herbarium specimens of plants they are interested in. Work is facilitated by a pleasant environment, lamps equipped with 5 diopter magnifying glasses to study details of items, CX 31 Olympus microscopes, STM stereomicroscopes and Schoeller AFP-210L scales.

Students can process samples and plant material needed for their thesis.

Students can use herbarium collections made for Advanced Plant Determination and other subjects:

The herbarium collection is open from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every working day. Upon agreement, it is also possible to use the study room and the herbaria collection at a different time.

Collected and dried plant material, from which herbarium items are subsequently created, is also processed here. These items are continuously recorded in the database.

Database:

Database Demus 10, developed by the Methodological Centre for Information Technologies in the Museology (CITeM) Moravian Museum in Brno http://www.citem.cz/ is used for keeping records of all the items.

Item loans:

A list of items of a particular genus or species can be prepared upon request. These items can then be loaned to professionals for their study.

A small library is located in the study room of the herbarium. The library carries the following titles:
